The Chevrolet Aveo may not be at the top of anyone’s “most awesome cars” list, but this mod will surely get it onto some. Florida-based company The Car Factory took the modest Chevy Aveo, ripped off its skin, and built this incredible mod around the underlying frame. The Extra Terrestrial Vehicle, or ETV, looks like just the car to draw envious (and perplexed) stares from everyone it passes by.

Mike Vetter and other crew members at the Car Factory custom built the car’s unbelievable new body, assembled it and put it up for sale on eBay for a whopping $86,000. Considering the amount of work involved, that price is probably reasonable.

2012 BMW 1 Series M Coupe Detroit 2011

The 1 Series M Coupe is a car capable of turbocharging the dreams of many an enthusiast, BMW or otherwise – but the question many have is whether it can it turn the dreams of M3 buyers into something less... dreamy. During this week's Detroit Auto Show press days, we spoke to Dr. Kay Segler, president of BMW M GmbH, about what 1 Series M Coupe means for Bimmer's performance brand and the M3.

Dr. Segler responded to those worried about the 1 Series M Coupe being better than the M3 with "the M3 is the car of M, the icon, playing in another league. The best feeling is still in an M3." So even though BMW's product and technology PR rep Matthew Russell described the 1 Series M as "an M3 in a 1 Series body," the 1 M is distanced from the M3 by its limited options, including the fact that the M button on the steering wheel only adjusts throttle response, nothing else.

On the other hand, when discussing concerns that the 1 M was engineered so as not to step on the M3's toes, Segler said "It was never held back at any stage. It is as good as it can be, this was exactly the car to build." When we asked how much one would have to spend in order to make it better than an M3, we were told that it would make more sense to buy an M3. "It is not a replacement for the M3," he also said. Russell added, "The M3 is in the middle of its life, it has a long way to go."

And finally, our favorite answer came when we asked what is the competition for the 1 Series M Coupe, and Russell amusingly remarked, "A certified pre-owned M3."

What say you? Is BMW just being cocky or does the auto industry offer a true direct competitor for the 1 Series M Coupe?

Ferrari 458 Italia

Given the extraordinary waiting lists, most Ferrari buyers are probably taking possession of whatever vehicle in whatever specifications they can get their hands on. But if you find someone who ordered theirs directly from the factory and waited the months it took for delivery, ask them how much they paid. Not the list price, but all-in with all the extra bits and pieces. Because anyone who's been through the process will likely tell you that the sticker price is just the starting point.

Beyond the basic options list, Ferrari offers a Personalisation Programme (that's "personalization program" in American) that gives buyers nearly infinite control over every minute detail. And the new 458 Italia is no exception. As you'll see from the video after the jump, there's a whole new range of options – on top of the usual seat belt and brake caliper color choices – that includes unique touches like two-tone paint schemes (for that 599 GTO-style look) and carbon fiber everything, made in the same kilns that bake the components for the Scuderia's F1 racers. Just don't expect them to throw in the extra bits for free.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3

Mercedes-Benz wants to prove that its latest models deserve all the hype they are getting. The carmaker is entering one version at one of the most challenging races of the season, the 24-hour race in Dubai on Jan. 15, 2011. Three Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 vehicles will join this race. The cars will be fielded by Black Falcon (two of them, the number 7 and the number 8) and Heico Motorsport (the number 9). Production has already started and deliveries will begin in February 2011, after the FIA gives the green light.

The SLS AMG GT3 will feature the same engine used in the production version of the model, an AMG 6.3l V8. But what makes the engine for the GT3 version different is that power is sent to the wheels via a six-speed racing transmission with sequential gear-changes.

The carmaker will equip the model for racing, with the interior getting a racing driver bucket seat with a six-point seat belt and the HANS system (Head and Neck Support). For additional safety, the vehicle has the steel rollover cage, which also reinforces the aluminum spaceframe. To be able to purchase one, you need to pay at least EUR397,460 ($523,574) and be part of a certified racing team.

Mission Motors Mission R

The Mission R cut a seductive silhouette in a teaser shot from Mission Motors that presaged its arrival. Now, with its public debut scheduled for later today at the Long Beach International Motorcycle Show, the lights have come up and the bike is rather awe-inspiring. As we take it in details, from its front Brembo brakes to its rear single-sided swingarm, we are indeed smitten.

Mission Motors Mission R motor closeupNewly developed MissionEVT components have been intelligently integrated into a compact James Parker-conceived chassis, then dressed in a design of grace and aggression by Tim Prentice of Motonium. The result is an electric race bike that's smaller than a typical 600cc MotoGP machine, yet it holds a massive 14.4 kWh battery beneath its carbon fiber skin. You might not guess this creature weighs a significant 545 pounds (247.2 kg), and though we've yet to see it dance through the esses, we're hoping its movements will conceal this fact as well.

To push the package along, the liquid-cooled AC motor pumps out 141 horses with 115 pound-feet of twist on tap from 0 to 6500 RPM. Top speed hasn't been determined yet (it will only visit the track sometime after the calender flips to 2011), but the company expects it will easily see 160 miles per hour.

We will have the opportunity to see how the Mission R compares with its peers later in the new year when it competes in the TTXGP North American Championship. The factory team has a lot to prove after sitting out the 2010 season, but this certainly looks promising. The official press release and complete specifications await past the break.
